I’m Glenna Gordon, an American photographer and journalist, presently commuting between West Africa and Brooklyn. Previously, I lived in Liberia. And before that, I lived in Uganda. I’ve traveled and worked in over a dozen countries in Africa.
This blog is named after a found object — a plastic lion that was in a crate of discarded items a friend and a few other artists had gathered. I sat on their roof in Nakasero, Kampala sorting through the crate. On that day, I was looking for something. “You are lost!” a Uganda might say. But, I’d found this discarded kid’s toy, made in China on the cheap, that somehow ended up in East Africa. Something about the hollowed out, paint-chipped figurine appealed to my understanding of this place: I’d never seen a real lion, after all.

No matter what’s wrong, there’s always Kingo there to cheer me up. I’m not sure if the two cartoons above represent two different messages or two reiterations of essentially the same thing.
If anyone knows where I can find out more information on Kingo, please let me know.

The creator of Kingo is a guy called James Gayo.
I don’t have much info on him other than that he had a film in this year’s Amakula Kampala and I saw a documentary on this year’s ZIFF in which he also had an animated film. I think he was one of the first participants of the Maisha Film lab.

twini thats a lie! the creator of kingo is tom rush the guy who used to write old fox(R.I.P) he is the late dad to the late Allan cantankerous. james gayo did them for some time when tom rush was in exile and when he returned the guy was noble enough to return the rights back to the guy!! there is a book u shd buy it!!

Ages ago, I wanted to do a 3D animated short film using Kingo as a model.
Just for practice, nothing commercial… didn’t work out as planned.
Still, Kingo Rules.
Would James Gayo be the same Gayo of the Daily Nation Cartoons? Used to love the cartoons he did for “Whispers” by Wahome Mutahi.
Oh, and if anyone can PLEASE give me some info on the Whispers articles, you’d be my hero.

Tom Rushedgye, whom you so succinctly refer to as ‘the late dad to the late Allan cantankerous’, was the cartoonist behind Ekanya Comics.
James Gayo is a Tanzanian cartoonist, who as far as I know, has never lived in Uganda for more than a couple of weeks at a time.
Now look what you did, calling me a liar. You made me rant on Scarlett Lion’s page. Sorry GG.
