My mom brought me a bunch of stuff from the states to Egypt, which I’ve happily shared with my friends in Uganda, including Sour Patch Kids. They’re an American candy – gummies, sour on the outside, sweet on the inside, really an indescribable eating sensation.
I brought some to Obi and Mawe and some of the guys who hang out on the roof of the apartment building where we chill near Nakasero Market.
One of the guys says, “At first, I though, get these out of my mouth! What is this? But then, I liked it, and I wanted more and more in my mouth!”
“My favorite are the red ones.”
“I didn’t know they taste different.”
“If you eat them one by one, you can taste the difference of the flavors.”
“Ah, mpola mpola, slowly by slowly.”
My favorite catch all Luganda words, mpola mpola. I know about ten words of Luganda (mpola mpola counts for two) and they’re my favorite. If I bothered with labels on this blog, I’d have a label that said mpola mpola.

U didn’t bring some for me….
I can almost taste the candies….
Have u ever had that popcorn at the cinema. The one that is made with vinegar, or the one made with glucose? Every time I go to the cinema, I get half vinegar and half glucose then I “shake well before use”. Tastes weird but good.
I think your candies have the same effect.
But still….u don’t get off easy. Send me a virtual one. pretty Please.

Let’s meet up this weekend and I’ll bring you a book and some candies.
